The Great Alone

Morning Readers & boy do I have a recommendation for you!

*Trigger warning for those with who have experienced domestic violence*

The was an Audible book I listened to and Oh My Gosh. Whatever you do, do not listen to this and Betty back to back, the emotional drainage is real! Both of these stories are so heartbreaking and emotionally involved, it was almost exhausting in a way. However, I found every excuse to put in my headphones and listen while I spent time driving, cleaning, doing laundry, taking walks or just on the treadmill.

I connected with this story in two ways, first being the portrayal of off-grid living. I have spent 4 Canadian winters living off-grid while caring for farm animals & this was so on point. Nothing is ever easy, even on a good day, but when you add in snow & cold, it is just that much harder. Secondly, I appreciated Lenny’s third-person perspective on toxic love & relationships. I don’t find many books really get the depth and complexity of that type of relationship but there were no hold backs in this one.

“But books were only a reflection of real life not the thing itself”

“I guess my momma was right about love, as screwed up as she is, she understands the durability and lunacy of it. You can’t make yourself fall in love, I suppose, and you can’t make yourself fall out of it.”

“You are my heart baby girl, you are everything I did right”

“She felt like she’d been nothing, a reflection of other people. She never quite understood her own worth. I hope she…knows finally how loved she was.”

You will absolutely remember this story well after the last page and it definitely deserves its place on the shelf. It looks like the movie rights were purchased just before the book’s release but with no announcements have been made since 2018 and I’m really curious to see what comes of this considering it was a New York Times Best Seller and a Goodreads Choice Award.

I have three other books from Kristin Hannah on my TBR (The Women, The Nightingale, and The Four Winds) and if this book is anything to go off of, I think I am going to love them!

Happy Reading!
