The Fallen and the Kiss of Dusk by Carissa Broadbent
3 ⭐’s- Read Worthy!
Kindle & Audible: US or CA
I always wonder how far ahead authors plan into a series; do they see the end or do they see an end? If the series is successful and you had only planned 3 books, do you keep on going? I think maybe that’s why a series can feel like it’s getting away from us, or why it feels like it’s plateauing as the original storyline stretches to acomodate it.
In The Fallen & the Kiss of Dusk, after Mische’s sacrifice plunges the world into eternal night, a goddess offers her and the imprisoned Asar one last path back to each other. They must seize the power of the god of death so Asar can ascend to true divinity. With the underworld collapsing and the gods preparing for war, they’ll have to find their way back to each other and toward divinity.

I loved the first installment of this series, The Serpent & the Wings of Night; a world of vampires mixed with a gladiatorial plot felt original, but I feel as if the series has plateaued somewhat at this point.
The writing and characters were good, the plot and ending were ok, and I did like how it tied back into the ‘main’ story line. I just felt as if I’ve lost the originality of the world I first fell in love with. Mische was a great character, and I loved the risk the author took when the plot line detoured along Mische’s point of view, however I feel like her character development flatlined, and she became like every other FMC looking to save their beloved, with nothing setting her apart specifically. Even the plot has some Megara and Hercules, save her from the dead and become a god vibes. (Not a Spoiler, it sets this out early on in the book)
I am still looking forward to reading the next installment & hope Broadbent brings it back!
