This book could not have come to me at a better time; not that I was in a slump and needed motivation, but that I’ve been slowly building up to really start pushing myself and this book helped solidify my feelings of setting that aspirational bar.

In Greek mythology Icarus was warned not to fly too high to the sun, caught up in his success, when he did so his wings melted and he plummeted to the sea. The idea being that we should be wary of getting carried away and sticking our necks above the status quo, above what is known to be safe.

Godin’s argument is that playing it safe is the real danger. Compliance does not lead to transformative success. Instead Godin wants you to treat your work as art, work that changes someone for the better. Stop waiting to be picked, pick yourself, and work to push the envelope in what you do.

If you are stuck in a rut, or having a hard time finding direction… READ THIS!

You will never find your true purpose, or realize your full potential, unless you have the courage to fly close to the sun and challenge the status quo. This has really challenged me to look at this blog, and my posts, from the perspective that they are a form of artwork, and to see the value it is adding to people’s lives by connecting them to books, ideas and romanticizing their own lives & creativity.

The Icarus Deception is an inspiring and motivating read and will definitely be re-read if ever I’m having low moments in my creativity and work!
