I hope you all had a great weekend! I made a quick day trip down to Brockville to see a friend and I swear I’m in love, it is the absolute cutest town by the water and my heart immediately wants to buy a boat and set sail.
Reading wise, I was sent an advance copy of Thief of Night and I actually loved this take on shadow-magic.
In Thief of Night, Holly Black picks up where Book of Night ended, with Charlie Hall has become the Hierophant for the Cabal, a ruthless group that wields shadow magic. To save the man she loves, she made a deal to be bound to him, but in doing so wiped away his memories of her. In his place is Red, a powerful Blight with Vince’s face but none of his affection. Together they are thrown into a mass murder mystery and must find out who is responsible for a massacre at a church.
I actually really enjoyed this book, the characters were likeable and their relationships and personalities furthered the plot well. What I really fell in love with was the world building and Black’s take on shadow-magic, I adore when a fantasy feels like it could almost be real!
Now full divulgence, I did not read The Book of Night and I think that’s another reason I really had to lend credit to this book and the author in her writing style. Holly still managed to set the stage and catch the reader up on our storyline, made it a really enjoyable read, and I know that if I want more depth and context into Charlie & Vincent’s relationship, I can go back and read the first.
And this all made so much more sense when I learned that Holly is in fact a New York Times best selling young adult author, and actually penned The Spiderwick Chronicles!
This one quote really stood out to me:
“Love is terrifying.” He shook his head. “And for someone who has tried not to feel for a long time, it’s threatening. It feels like an attack”
“So you do like me,” Charlie said.
So if you haven’t read Book of Night, don’t let that deter you from reading Holly Black’s latest, Thief of Night!
