Is This A Cry For Help? by Emily Austin
Kindle & Audible: US or CA
Hey All & Happy Wednesday!
I was an incredibly lucky lady who got her hands on the advance copy of Emily Austin’s newest book, Is This A Cry For Help? This book is due to be released January 13th, 2026, and I am absolutely giddy with excitement to see everyone get their hands on it!

Darcy is a librarian whose life unravels after the death of her ex-boyfriend triggers a spiral of grief and guilt. Returning to work from medical leave, she finds her library at the center of book ban controversy and access to freedom of speech drama. Darcy slowly rebuilds her sense of self, embraces her queer identity and finds a renewed sense of self and peace. This novel so beautifully defines the roles libraries play in our communities and touches on so many present-day issues.
This book actually inspired me to join my local library’s reading club, and I checked out books for the first time since I was probably 10 years old. And yes, I can confirm, they actually let you leave with a stack of books, for free! (eventually returning them, of course lol)

This novel is the poster child of a Book Club pick and is packed with tons of discussion points and layered themes. It examines everything from customer service jobs and LGBTQ identity to gender roles, societal norms, and explores depression, anxiety, and dissociation with nuance. The story even digs into questions of freedom of speech and self-actualization.
The writing is sharp and intentional and our main character feels wholly unique. It’s one of those books that sparks conversation from every angle; personal growth, identity, the weight of expectations, and leaves room for your own reflection.
Quotes I loved:

I especially love that this is from another Ottawa area author, and they just seem to be knocking it out of the park lately! I’m so excited to be able to support a local author who is making big impact in the reading community!
Whether you get it as a paper-back or hard-cover, this one is definitely worth having on your shelf! Happy Reading!
