I Feel Bad About My Neck

I Feel Bad About My Neck by Nora Ephron
Kindle & Audible: US or CA

Morning Readers & Happy Friday!

This book was made for Audible, and Nora is just that sarcastic, witty, meandering grandmother I think everyone needs.

There are some moments where I just had to rewind to hear them again, I was laughing! Where did this woman get this sass?!

“If I was home alone at night I’d cook myself an entire meal from one of these cookbooks. Then I sat down in front of the TV and ate it… ok I didn’t have a date, but at least I wasn’t one of those lonely women who sat at home with a pathetic container of yogurt. Eating an entire meal for 4 that I had cooked for myself was probably equally pathetic, but that never crossed my mind”

“Reading is one of the main things I do. Reading is everything. Reading makes me feel I’ve accomplished something, learned something, become a better person. Reading makes me smarter, reading gives me something to talk about later on, reading is the unbelievably healthy way my ADD medicates itself. Reading is escape, and the opposite of escape, it’s a way to make contact with reality after a day of making things up and it’s a way of making contact with someone else’s imagination after a day that’s all too real… But my ability to pick something up and read it… is entirely dependent on the whereabouts of my reading glasses.”

“Turn it into a den, a gym, a guest room, or if you already have all 3, a room for wrapping presents. Do this as soon as possible. Leaving your child’s room as is may encourage your child to return. You do not want this.”

I did notice that a few reviews online noted a certain level of tone deafness/entitlement/privilege and I mean, is it tone def? I can’t say it’s not, but a quick google will tell you Nora was born in 1941 and grew up in the 40’s & 50’s; in an entirely different world, government, economy and social class than 90% of the people writing reviews on her book here today. Reading is about experiencing a different life and expanding your perspective, not rereading your own. It’d be like watching the Kardashians and complaining how unrealistic their show is. It’s real to them, because that’s the world they live in, in my opinion anyways.

Overall, this book was a really enjoyable listen and would be a great short read if you’re tight on time, or want something a bit more breezy that’s packed with humor, insights and no-nonsense banter. Nora’s cadence is unique, her many tangents entertaining and her book a perfect weekend read!

Happy Reading!
