The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab
Kindle & Audible: US or CA
Morning Readers & Happy Wednesday!
We are making it through the week & what a week it’s been! I’ve been painting & nailing for days and the prep to the outside of the ‘cottage’ is almost done, I am that much closer to setting this place up as an Airbnb! Add finals into the mix for some summer courses and I am simply done in at the end of the day when I curl up to read for an hour.
But read I must because ‘The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue’ is one of those books you cannot just simply put down, and when I did finish it, book hangover! You know when you watch a horror movie that really creeps you out and 20 minutes after it finishes you’re still jumpy? This is that feeling, where you close the book and your head is still living in that world.
So we follow Addie LaRue after she makes a deal with a God of Darkness, and the story winds its way through history, layered with the present. Now, I’m a sucker for a ‘plausible’ fantasy, historical references, and a strong, smart female lead and this book hit all of those notes. Two more reading preferences; I’m not your ‘traditional’ romance reader (not huge on the ‘mush & gush’ factor, I like my romance to feel real) and I’m generally not a fan of how authors in general tie up their endings. I find it either feels rushed or too neatly packaged. This book… the absolute perfect balance.
A few quotes that hooked the heart:
“But a life without art, without wonder, without beautiful things- she would go mad. She has gone mad. What she needs are stories. Stories are a way to preserve one’s self. To be remembered. And to forget. Stories come in so many forms: in charcoal, and in song, in paintings, poems, films. and books. Books, she has found, are a way to live a thousand lives- or to find strength in a very long one”
“It is sad, of course, to forget. But it is a lonely thing, to be forgotten. To remember when no one else does.”
“Life is so brief, and every night in Rennes I’d go to bed, and lie awake, and think, there is another day behind me, and who knows how few ahead.”
“Some people are fine with that. They like knowing where to put their feet. But if you only walk in other people’s steps, you cannot make your own way. You cannot leave a mark.”
One thing I will mention, as some people are interested in representation for LGBTQ, this book has it in spades and comes across in a natural, subtle kind of way that allows you to connect with each of the characters and their own development.
This is definitely one of those books that you remember well after you’ve finished the last page, and is absolutely hardcover worthy!
I hope you all enjoy the rest of your week & Happy Reading!
