*Trigger warning for … pretty much everything this book covers*
I’m going to start this off by firstly saying… I hope life is kind to you today. & I hope there is sunshine and a good book where ever you happen to be.
My week has been an emotional wreck, in no short of thanks compounded by this novel, Betty by Tiffany McDaniel. This was a ‘re-listen’ for the sake of a proper review so at least I was somewhat prepared but oh my gosh, the second time around is still just as raw. Maybe because you’re not as shocked at the face value of the scenes, and are able to really recognize how truly and deeply disturbed humanity can be. Keeping in mind that this book, it’s characters and their stories, were inspired by the author’s family, and this book falls somewhere into the realm of ‘Fictionalized History’. All 17 hours of this audible experience were genuinely traumatic and absolutely not for the faint of heart. And just when you think you’ve been told the whole story, no, Tiffany says absolutely not and decides to pull the blinds off, leaving you reeling again.
I don’t think you can review this book without appreciating the traditional story telling methods that wrap around this novel. The unique style and approach the author takes in her delivery are the vehicle that really drove this one home. From an audible standpoint I usually lean towards those that are voiced by the authors themselves, however, Dale Dickey, you deserve a standing ovation! As much as McDaniel’s writing style brought this story home, it is Dickey’s voice that gave it a life of its own and I fully believe no one could have done it better.
This book to me is what reading is all about. It is about sharing stories and finding truths, no matter how hard they are to hear. This is the kind of book that drove me to start this blog in the first place, sharing stories that make an impression, that have the power to change your perspective, the power to heal, and that stay with you long after the last page.
