The Let Them Theory by Mel Robbins

Morning Readers & Happy Thursday!
At some point this past September the universe knew I needed Mel Robbins in my life. Don’t ask me how, it just knew. Because there I was, crying at my desk at work, after a breakup, throwing on a podcast, any podcast really, to try and refocus while I attempted to manage some menial tasks. Next thing I knew Mel was pitching her pre-release, live, for her upcoming book “Let Them”. I listened to that 20 minute pitch, yup, still crying, and promptly pre-ordered her book.
For the next 6 months I watched and listened to Mel Robbins like she was the life blood that was going to get me through this mess of a thing called the ‘healing process’. The book finally came out and I absolutely consumed it. Let me put it this way… I have 43 ‘notes’ and clips saved on this audio book.
Now if I’m being honest, I originally gave this book a 3-star. I liked it, I love Mel’s presentation style and how she engages with her listeners. I just felt like I’d heard it all before, it ‘read’ like a collection of her podcasts. Although, as I started reviewing my notes, re-listening to the saved snippets, I realized wow! There is SO much information in this book, and it is absolutely one I will be revisiting periodically, I just couldn’t leave it at 3-stars, this book has so much to give!
There are so many quotes I would love to be able to share but here are just a few of my favorite moments:
- “…Buddhism and Radical Acceptance, both of which teach that suffering comes from resisting reality. The pain you feel comes from wishing that things were different than what they are“
- “Your career is your responsibility and you have more power than you think. It’s time to start acting like it.”
- “What if you just gave yourself permission to live your life? …What if you pour your time and energy into your hobbies, your habits, your happiness? Let me ask you this question, what change would you make if you weren’t worried about being judged. What is something that you’re afraid to admit that you want?… What have you been too scared to try?”
- “If all the energy and time you’ve spent resisting reality, wanting, wishing, if all those thoughts and feelings and precious moments in your day were put towards something that truly mattered to you, where would you be? Who would you be? What would you have achieved? Because that is the cost of not saying ‘Let Them‘”
- “Most human beings have never done the work to understand themselves or heal their past, or manage their own emotions and if they haven’t done that for themselves then they are incapable of doing that for you. And they are incapable of showing up in a way that you deserve. Let them.“
- “When you turn life into a competition, you turn other people into a problem“
- “If you can be honest with yourself about what you truly want and take responsibility for creating it, you will. You don’t have to be special, you just have to get up every day and put one foot in front of the other and work hard to do a little better and be a little better than you were yesterday.“
- “no one gets sober until being drunk is more painful and harder than doing the work to get sober… You have to feel the pain of it in order to say ‘I got to change‘…Healing is a choice…The process of getting better will always feel worse in the beginning.””
So if you or anyone you know is going through a hard time, or maybe just needs that pep-talk to get them motivated, I definitely recommend this book. Still not sure? Check out Mel’s Youtube & Podcast Channel out for yourself!
With that I will leave you with one last quote from Mel,
“You get one wild and precious life, so go live it in a way that makes you proud”
Happy Reading!
